El Rio Health FMR is a an FQHC based, 4 residents/year, community program designed to train caring and compassionate family physicians able to care for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Our goal is to graduate exceptional family physicians and leaders with the skills to care for individuals from all backgrounds using their clinical acumen, compassion and understanding of the communities served. The curriculum is focused on the breadth and sophistication of family medicine while paying attention to community needs. Faculty and residents work together to manage patients’ physical and psychological conditions and provide preventive health care. Our new residency (first class, July 2025) in Tucson, Arizona has a focus on marginalized populations while caring for individuals across our community. Personal attention to each of our residents throughout their training is assured given our small size. Although our focus is on ambulatory care, residents receive excellent hospital training with our community partner, Tucson Medical Center. Residents' research opportunities are prevalent considering the vast array of El Rio's more than 130,000 active patients. Choosing residency training at El Rio Health is a choice to learn clinical medicine in the context of the community health center movement. The legacy of that movement is excellence in acute care, chronic care, preventive health services and wellness programs, and advocacy. It is clinical medicine that combines patient need with community need and always seeks to bring to the table all those within our community, to make sure everyone’s voice is heard and understood. It is a legacy that seeks to overcome disparities of care and disenfranchisement. If you are interested in southern Arizona and caring for a diverse population, please visit with our faculty on Arizona Avenue in the exhibit hall.
