At North Country HealthCare, we don’t just train physicians—our 4-4-4 residency program cultivates compassionate, competent leaders who are committed to transforming the health of underserved and rural communities. Our program is designed to train family medicine physicians who provide comprehensive, culturally responsive, and patient-centered care to diverse populations across the region. Our curriculum goes beyond the basics of family medicine to include comprehensive training in community medicine, behavioral health integration, complex chronic disease management, infectious disease, preventive care, and population health. We are dedicated to building a future in which all individuals—regardless of location, income, or background—have access to high-quality, equitable care. Our residency is based in Flagstaff, a city that blends small-town charm with big opportunities. At 7,000 feet in elevation and surrounded by national forests, Flagstaff is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, a center for innovation in sustainability, and a culturally rich community with deep Indigenous roots. But what makes Flagstaff truly special is its role as a gateway to rural Northern Arizona. Residents regularly rotate through nearby sites such as Williams, Tuba City, and the Grand Canyon, gaining exposure to frontier medicine and developing the agility required to provide care in any setting. As a federally qualified health center, we are privileged to serve our rural and underserved communities. The majority of our patients live below the poverty line, and many face complex social determinants of health. We train leaders in interprofessional teams and work with social workers, pharmacists, community health workers, case managers, and behavioral health clinicians. This team-based care model strengthens outcomes and reflects how rural medicine is best practiced in the real world. We also place a strong emphasis on public health and preventive care—whether it’s increasing childhood immunization rates, addressing food insecurity, or developing community-wide wellness programs. Wellness is important. We emphasize work-life balance, with reasonable call schedules and built-in wellness time; nature-based wellness, taking advantage of Flagstaff’s hiking trails, ski slopes, and stargazing; peer support and mentorship, with built-in systems for emotional and professional check-ins; and faculty connection, so residents always have someone to turn to. Our wellness program is resident-led, and we take pride in the culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and camaraderie that defines our program. Whether you’re drawn to rural practice, community health, full-spectrum family medicine, or healthcare leadership—North Country HealthCare’s Family and Community Medicine Residency Program can launch your career with purpose and passion.
