At Portsmouth Regional Hospital Family Medicine Residency, we have intentionally designed our program around that philosophy.
We believe continuity clinic should be the foundation of Family Medicine training, which is why every intern begins residency in our innovative Primary Care Experience rotation. Rather than waiting months to establish continuity with patients, you’ll start building your own panel immediately while developing the clinical reasoning, communication skills, and confidence that define outstanding family physicians.
Our educational philosophy centers on the ABCDs of resident development: Autonomy, Belonging, Competence, and Deep Meaning. We strive to create a learning environment where residents are progressively challenged while remaining supported by dedicated faculty, engaged co-residents, and collaborative care teams. Our goal is to keep every learner in the “Learning Zone”—where growth occurs through thoughtful mentorship rather than unnecessary stress.
Our “Clinic First” approach extends throughout all three years of training. Dedicated outpatient experiences focus not only on evidence-based patient care, but also on leadership, quality improvement, practice management, and the transition into independent practice. Residents also rotate through both of our continuity clinics—including a Federally Qualified Health Center—to appreciate different models of care and diverse patient populations.
As a newer residency, our culture has been intentionally built by residents and faculty together. We value curiosity, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Small class sizes allow for individualized mentorship while providing the flexibility to tailor educational experiences to each resident’s career goals.
