UAB Marshall Family Medicine Residency Program
The UAB Marshall Family Medicine Residency Program is a developing, community-based training program located in Boaz, Alabama at Marshall Medical Centers, designed to prepare physicians for full-spectrum family medicine practice with a strong emphasis on rural health.
As a 6-6-6 program sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), our mission is to train compassionate, highly skilled family physicians who are equipped to meet the diverse healthcare needs of rural and underserved populations. Through a combination of hands-on clinical training, longitudinal patient care, and academic support from a leading academic medical center, residents will gain experience across the full continuum of care—including outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and community-based settings.
Our program is currently pending ACGME accreditation with an anticipated inaugural class in 2027. Supported by federal rural residency development funding, the program is intentionally designed to strengthen the physician workforce pipeline in Marshall County and surrounding communities, addressing critical access gaps in primary care.
Under the leadership of Program Director Dr. Chandler Stisher, the residency emphasizes continuity of care, community engagement, and evidence-based practice—core principles reflected across UAB’s family medicine training programs. Residents will be trained to become adaptable clinicians, leaders, and advocates who are committed to improving health outcomes and advancing care in the communities they serve.
