The mission of our program is to provide you with quality clinical training that emphasizes clinical excellence, teamwork, and leadership. Residents are exposed to a broad range of pathology that prepares them well for careers in hospital medicine, primary care, or fellowship training.
This residency program will provide you with a great degree of autonomy in overseeing patient care as you grow in your competency. We treat our residents with respect and are responsive to their needs and receptive to their ideas for improvement within the program. Residents work with interdisciplinary teams including behavioral science, diabetes educator, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical, and nursing students.
The program offers a dynamic and exciting didactic curriculum including; clinical case conferences, QI and safety conferences, evidence based medicine, cost conscious care, board review sessions, hands-on simulation sessions, journal clubs, and the fundamentals of practice management and the business of medicine. The research director and coordinator helps residents to create robust research, publications, and presentations. Residents are encouraged and supported to engage in scholarly work, ranging from local and regional presentations, attending national conferences, and publishing scientific manuscripts. The environment at St. Lucie Medical Center (SLMC) is supportive of residents and the Wellness program is very robust and supported by our Behavioral Health faculty.
Faculty advisors provide guide residents throughout their training. Time is allotted within the residency for research, quality improvement, and/or educational scholarship.
Our program is affiliated with medical schools in the area providing access to library resources, research support, and the opportunity to work with medical students to sharpen your teaching and mentoring skills.
SLMC serves the cities of Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, and Stuart. Port St. Lucie is the eight largest city in Florida. Our metropolitan catchment area is a large as Fort Lauderdale and growing. SLMC is a 229 bed Joint Commission Accredited Top Performing Hospital with a Healthgrades Excellence award for Patient Safety, and is a certified Primary Stroke and Chest Pain Center. The hospital offers a full range of acute care services, including rehabilitation, obstetrics, and inpatient and outpatient robotic surgery. The SLMC Orthopedic and Spine Center is considered one of the best in the country for joint replacement.
SLMC is part of HCA and has over 350 physicians, more than 60,000 patients per year, and is committed to excellence in GME. The hospital supports our 18 resident Family Medicine Residency and an EM Residency. The Family Medicine Residency Program has was established in 2012 and is ACGME accredited. The Family Medicine Clinic cares for a diverse population and is part of the Heart and Family Health Institute.
The Treasure Coast is a great place to live, has some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida, great golf courses, great boating and fishing, and diverse communities with a low cost of living and high quality of life. Located 50 minutes north of Palm Beach, 1.5 hours south from Orlando, served by the Florida Turnpike and I95 and West Palm Beach (PBI) international airport.
