The Carilion Clinic-VTC Family Medicine Residency Program, founded in 1969 and located in beautiful southwest Virginia, is ACGME accredited with Osteopathic Recognition.
We are a large, tertiary referral center for over one million people and serve a diverse patient population with a variety of socioeconomic needs. We are part of the Family and Community Medicine Department, which consists of over 250 family physicians and advanced care providers with practices located throughout the region in urban, suburban, and rural areas.
Affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, we are a 10/10/10 program with 2 clinic sites established in areas of designated medical need, both of which are Patient-Centered Medical Homes with on-site pharmacists, social worker, nutritionist, behavioral health clinician, community health outreach workers, and care coordinators. Our team-based model of care promotes population health management.
We provide various academic tracks and ample elective time to allow our residents the opportunity to individualized educational plans based on future practice goals. Faculty areas of expertise include Sports Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, physician leadership and wellbeing, research, obstetrics, and behavioral medicine. We offer seven focused tracks: Academic, Leadership, Sports Medicine, Obstetrics, Osteopathic Recognition, Women’s Health, Hospital Medicine. The institutional fellowships open to Family Medicine physicians include: Addiction Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Care, Medical Informatics, and Wilderness Medicine
We have deliberate culture by design that fosters a nurturing and collegial educational environment among faculty, residents, and staff members. Regular social activities promote physician wellness and relationship building across the practice.
