Our residency is designed to train full spectrum family physicians who are called to care for the needs of rural and underserved populations in the Northwest. We are a fully accredited ACGME 2-2-2 Rural Training Program. We are a collaborative program partnering with Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital as our sponsoring institution and One Community Health Migrant Community Health Center in Hood River, Oregon as our family medicine continuity clinic and Providence Milwaukie Family Medicine Residency as our sister urban partner.
Residents in the first year live in Portland and train alongside residents from our sister residency program, the Providence Milwaukie Family Medicine Residency.
In the second and third years, residents live in Hood River, OR, a beautiful and diverse rural community 70 miles east of Portland in the Columbia Rive r Gorge. Inpatient work is centered at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital with a full ER and an obstetrical unit that delivers over 400 babies a year.
In all three years, the residents have their continuity family medicine ambulatory practice at an affiliated Hood River based Federally Qualified Health Center, One Community Health. Residents return to Portland for two- to four-week blocks each year for higher volume rotations in obstetrics, adult medicine and desired electives.
Rural communities depend on clinicians with a broad scope of skills to care for them and their families. Modern rural family physicians still require a breadth of training, experiences and mentorship that may not be available or easily supported in urban communities. Our rural residency program incorporates the rigors of academic-based training with real-world experience in a small community away from urban academic centers. Our hope is that program graduates end up practicing in small, rural communities and have the skills to care for a diverse patient population, maintain work-life balance and enjoy life-long learning.
