University of Virginia FMR
The Department of Family Medicine
Our program combines the best of what university and community settings have to offer. We feature a challenging and comprehensive curriculum, with all the specialty services and resources available in a Top 100 quaternary care center. Outpatient clinical experiences are offered in a variety of nearby community settings for residents who choose to focus on urban/suburban, rural, or global health.
Our faculty has advanced training and expertise in many areas, including Sports Medicine, MSK Ultrasound, Geriatrics, Maternal and Child Health, Outpatient Procedures, Evidence-Based Medicine, Global Health, and Behavioral Medicine. Opportunities abound to teach, and those interested in research will find guidance from faculty who publish regularly.
Our department has a strong behavioral health emphasis. The Family Stress Clinic provides therapy to families and individuals with a wide variety of problems. Our innovative Collaborative Care model brings psychologists into our Family Medicine Clinic to help residents and faculty provide better care to patients with mental health issues.
Another department focus is Evidence-informed Decision Making (EIDM), a paradigm that empowers doctors to use the best medical evidence to benefit patients. This training gives our graduates the confidence and skills needed to provide the best possible care to their patients throughout their career.
