PROGRAM BACKGROUND

The F&MCW Forest Home Health Center in Milwaukee, WI is a brand-new, state of the art facility designed to provide health care to the community and education to family physicians. Services provided in the building include Family Medicine, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder, Osteopathic Manipulation, Refugee Care, Community-Based Research and Community Programming with an emphasis on care for Spanish-speaking populations. The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Family and Community Medicine has a fifty-year history of training family physicians in the Milwaukee area and beyond, to provide this type of care. In partnership with Froedtert Hospital, the region’s only Academic Health Center, family medicine residents can expect a broad and rich experience with learning opportunities across the spectrum of care, specifically dedicated toward learning the aspects of care most important to underserved and under-resourced patients and communities.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

Hello! As Program Director, I am excited to welcome you to the online home for the Froedtert & MCW South Side Family Medicine Residency Program. We are thrilled to be training family medicine residents at Froedert’s newest primary care facility – The Forest Home Health Center. Embedded in the heart of Milwaukee’s 53204 zip-code, which is home to one of the city’s largest Latino/a populations, the Forest Home Health Center is an ideal place to learn and practice family medicine! This health center also provides a crucial link in the community to the region’s only Academic Medical Center, which is long recognized for its innovation and clinical excellence.

Our primary goal is to provide community-centered primary care training that is culturally appropriate for Milwaukee and Milwaukee’s Hispanic community. Our faculty have years of experience training residents, and we know what it takes to provide excellent education and clinical care. We are passionate about improving the health of our community and hope to foster that in our residents.  Doing this work at the Forest Home Health Center enables us to design an adaptable program that meets the needs of the community and prepares physicians entering medically- underserved practice settings, including caring for Spanish-speaking patients in their native language. Our residency program’s website is the first one in the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospital (MCWAH) programs to be fully translated into Spanish which is something we are very proud to offer to applicants! 

We are currently recruiting for a second class of 6 residents to follow our inaugural class of residents. We will ultimately recruit a total complement of 18 residents in the next 24 months. Through partnerships with Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin, residents have the opportunity to access the highest level of academic and clinical resources, while remaining based in a community setting.   Additional community partnerships are a key to our success as a program and health center.  Residents participate in inpatient rotations at Froedtert Hospital, the region’s only academic medical center, and Children’s Wisconsin. Outpatient rotations including resident continuity clinic will occur at Forest Home Health Center, where residents develop patient panels and learn what it really means to care for the community.
