Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Phelps Family Medicine Program is an innovative, forward-thinking, three-year residency in family medicine—the first accredited family medicine residency program in New York state to be established since 1995.

We were founded on a unique partnership among an academic institution, a hospital and a federally qualified community health center. Today, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Phelps Hospital and Open Door Family Medical Centers are the partners in making our program mission a reality.

Guided by our mission, residents share a passion for delivering exceptional care to our diverse community. The pillars of our program mission are:

  • Innovation: Training in a medical system that values and operates at the leading edge of technology and the patient-centered medical home model to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based care.
  • Patient-centric care: The opportunity for residents to explore and lead a patient-centered medical home while training at a nationally recognized, community-based health center where patients are at the heart of the care team, engaged as active partners in their health.
  • Academic & clinical excellence: Residents train under the supervision of exceptionally trained medical clinicians across a full range of disciplines, working one-on-one with attending physicians on clinical rotations including OB/GYN, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and others.
  • A holistic approach: Behavioral science training experience is incorporated into the program, equipping residents with skills to interact sensitively with patients—recognizing, assessing, and initiating treatment for a range of behavioral and medical needs.
